'A Barrister for the Earth' Reflects

During a presentation about her latest book and a panel discussion followed by a Q&A on Monday, barrister Mónica Feria-Tinta explored how the law can help protect nature, making a call for legal imagination and a shift from an anthropocentric perspective to an ecocentric one. Tuesday involved a visit to St Fittick's Park in Torry to meet Friends of St Fittick's Park and learn about their struggle to save their park from further industrialisation. The event was hosted by the We Are Nature Collective in collaboration with the Grampian Regional Equality Council (GREC), the University of Aberdeen's Environmental Arts and Humanities Network (EAHN), and the National Literacy Trust's National Year of Reading 2026.

Mónica Feria-Tinta is an award-winning international barrister and author of the critically acclaimed 'A Barrister for the Earth: Ten Cases of Hope for Our Future' (2025), described as "a vital book for our times". Mónica has represented landmark environmental and climate cases around the world, including the ground-breaking Los Cedros Rights of Nature case, helping to shape new legal approaches to protecting ecosystems and addressing climate change. Her work has been recognised internationally, and she has been named a finalist for Barrister of the Year at The Lawyer Awards 2025, Woman of the Year at the Women & Diversity in Law Awards 2025, and The Times' first Lawyer of the Week in 2025.
