Activity

Co-organisation of a conference panel together with colleague Dr Fiona Johnstone (Durham University)

Description

Dr Silvia Casini (University of Aberdeen) and Dr Fiona Johnstone (University of Durham) were excited by the resonances between papers and the possibilities suggested for a more granular visual science literacy in art history and visual culture.

Jacob Badcock (UCL) spoke on photography as 'civil skill' & tool for measurement of the health impacts on workers at Agbogbloshie. Some brilliant insights into visual research coproduction & worker-focused solutions to occupational health crises;

Dizhen Wu (SOAS) discussed visual images of medical practice in late Qing Pictorials. These image-text combinations were essentially visual propaganda designed to convince a Chinese audience of the value of Western Medicine;

David Houston Jones (University of Exeter) discussed Covid-19 images and more in a provocative paper that covered forensic aesthetics, visual evidence, computer vision and the aesthetics choices underpinning medical scientific imagery;

We were honoured to close the panel with the ever-brilliant Martin Kemp (University of Oxford), whose paper "The Beautiful Killer" focussed on Covid-19 visuals, covering technical images, diagrams, cartoons and art.

The goal is to curate an edited volume and we have already received an expression of interest from an excellent university press.
