Paper: Custodial tensions: A review and discussion of far-right uses of heritage

Description

Abstract: As political parties of the far-right have become part of the mainstream political landscape across the world, the parties and their rise have become objects of cross-disciplinary research. What is more, over the last five years we have witnessed a real surge in the research literature that scrutinises how far-right parties, in particularly in Europe, use historical periods, narratives and monuments as rhetorical, staging and policy devices. Far from solely being a concern for researchers from archaeology, classics, history, and heritage studies, the topic engages researchers from political science, area studies, sociology, and anthropology. However, while the interest is broadening and the methods and empirical material used largely overlap, our on-going cross-disciplinary literature review indicates that there has been relatively little dialogue across disciplines. The aim of the paper is therefore to present a synthesis of the findings from the review. Moreover, drawing on the findings, we will discuss the tensions of responsibilities that arise when political leaders use their authority to speak and act in a custodial capacity on behalf of ‘the(ir) people’. Against this backdrop we address how researchers from different disciplinary backgrounds perceive, discuss, reflect on and potentially counteract these tensions.
