Communities of Fable: Telling and Retelling Supernatural Tales

Activity: Disseminating Research Exhibition/Festival

Description

Organised a series of events for the Being Human Festival 2023 comprised of the following activities:

1. Lead-in event: open call for traditional supernatural tales from Scotland and other countries told by the people living in Scotland today. The submitted tales were then used in our festival events which allowed for some co-creation.

2. Telling and Retelling Supernatural Tales Workshop: a creative writing workshop, held in two locations at the Aberdeen Arts Centre and Abbotsford, involving an interactive multimedia exploration of the collected traditional tales to inspire the writing of a modern-day supernatural story.

3. Sharing Supernatural Stories Workshop: a storytelling workshop at the Grampian Regional Equality Council’s language café for new communities in Aberdeen who are learning English as an additional language.

4. Post-festival digital outputs: A selection of the collected tales will be published, with permission, on our website in the form of an online exhibition with videos and audio recordings of the stories, and information on the tradition of supernatural storytelling in Scotland and Walter Scott’s engagement with local folktales and the supernatural. Participants at the creative writing workshops will also have the option of contributing to the digital showcase of supernatural tales on the website if they choose to submit the new story they have written at the event. This digital output will be shaped by the collected stories and leave a legacy beyond the project and festival events. It will be maintained on a dedicated page of the University of Aberdeen website.
