Head for the Hills: What I learnt from walking with Walter Scott (public facing / part of the Walter Scott 250 celebrations)

Description

In an article published in the Scottish Mountaineer magazine in August 2021, PhD student and WSRC member, Kate Ferrier, explored how Walter Scott’s approaches to wellbeing, nature and walking can help us to be more mindful when out in the hills today. Building on this, she led a guided hill walk with the outdoor organisation, Hillgoers, which gave participants an opportunity to reflect on Scott’s words in the great outdoors. Kate was then asked to deliver a talk at the Dundee Mountain Film Festival as part of the Thursday Night Special Evening programme, reflecting on what she had learnt from walking with Scott, and from her experiences running this project.

The project was launched as part of the Walter Scott 250 celebrations run by Abbotsford, Scott’s home in the Scottish Borders. The initial article was published in the Scottish Mountaineer magazine and included the promotion of the mental health charity, Black Dog Outdoors. The themed guided walk was organised and led by the Aberdeenshire-based outdoor company, Hillgoers. Our Hillgoers leader was an experienced hillwalking guide and had previously carried out conservation work on the estate through which we were walking. The paper was given as part of the Dundee Mountain Film Festival.

The article was published online and in print. The guided walk took place on the Mar Lodge Estate in the Cairngorms. The paper was delivered at the Steps Theatre in Dundee.
