The Battle of Orsha, 8 September 1514. The Military Divergence of East and West

Activity: Disseminating Research Presentation

Activity

Paper given at an intenational conference that was part of the city of Pavia's year-long commemoration of the 1525 Battle of Pavia.

Description

The paper presented the 1514 Battle of Orsha, in which a much smaller Polish-Lithuanian force defeated an invading Muscovite army. It used the remarkable contemporary painting of the battle by an artist who was present to argue that the painting depicts a key moment in the divergence of eastern and western European styles of warfare, in which the Poles, who had traditionally fought largely as western armies fougth, adopted a style of fighting used by the Lithuanians and Ruthenians, which was heavily influenced by steppe warfare.
