Description

The Sociability of Scottish Women Writers c1782-1854 Symposium

Celebrating the 200th anniversary of Susan Ferrier’s The Inheritance (1824), this joint WSRC/SWINC event aimed to generate much needed conversations about the literary sociability of Scottish women writers who were operating in Ferrier’s lifetime (c.1782-1854). The event centred around a symposium in which PGR and ECR delegates offered rich insights into the dynamics of Scottish women’s creative friendships and networks. The programme also included a manuscript display and discussion at The National Library of Scotland, a keynote delivered by WSRC member, Dr Ainsley McIntosh, and a women writers walking tour

Organisers of the symposium included WSRC members, Kate Ferrier and Prof Alison Lumsden. It also included SWINC members, Prof Penny Fielding and Prof Robert Irvine (SWINC is the Scottish Writing in the Nineteenth Century hub run by Edinburgh University). The event was further supported by WSRC colleagues, Dr Natalie Harries, Nadia Faconti-Christodoulou and Dr Ainsley McIntosh. External key members included NLS staff, Dr Ralph McLean and Dr Colin McIlroy, who led the manuscript session at the library, and Ruth Boreham, an independent research and tour guide in Edinburgh. Papers were given by PGR and ECR delegates attached to Universities from across Scotland and Europe

The symposium took place in 50 George Square, The University of Edinburgh, as well as in The National Library of Scotland.
