Research paper for Victoriographies research group seminar series, University of SurreyDescription
Charlotte Riddell’s collection Weird Stories was published in 1882. This is the same year that the Society for Psychical Research was founded, and the Married Women’s Property Act was passed, so both ghosts and gender were very much in the public imagination at the time. This talk will consider how the varied narrative structures of the six ghostly tales allows Riddell to reflect upon gendered forms of, and perceptions of, knowledge and experience. I will discuss how Riddell raises questions about how female knowledge and experience is recognized and valued, in relation to the supernatural, but also the day-to-day lives and concerns of men and women.Period | 18 Mar 2021 |
