On 17-18 September, Dr Katya Krylova (Lecturer in German, Film & Visual Culture) co-hosted a virtual international conference (together with Dr Ernest Schonfield, University of Glasgow) on the landmark Austrian writer Thomas Bernhard. The conference, entitled 'Thomas Bernhard: Language, History, Subjectivity', brought together scholars from three continents and thirteen different countries. Altogether the conference attracted over 80 registered participants. The conference was held over the course of two afternoons to facilitate participation from different time-zones. The conference was originally scheduled to take place in June at the Goethe-Institut Glasgow, but had to be postponed and moved online due to the Covid-19 pandemic.The conference keynote speakers were Prof. Rüdiger Görner (Queen Mary University of London) and Dr. Manfred Mittermayer (Universität Salzburg). In addition to the keynote lectures, a further 25 papers were presented at the conference on topics ranging from the evolving public image of Bernhard in Austria, to contemporary stagings of the writer’s plays in Russia. Altogether, the conference was testament to the enduring global appeal of a writer, whose works, while rooted in a specifically Austrian social and historical context, continue to inspire readers and scholars around the world. An online exhibition of photo-illustrations by Heiko Berner for Bernhard’s Ein Kind/A Child accompanied the conference.
