Research Profile

Research Interests:

  • We are interested in how different foods and their constituents inform fullness and satiety to the brain.
  • We are researching how cells of the gut and liver respond differently to different nutrients particularly dietary fibre, and also how these nutrients may differentially affect metabolism to promote improved health.
  • We are also interested in how diet-induced differences in the gut microbiome may alter host metabolism and health.

Our research results should provide evidence which, after validation in human trials, may be released as advice to the general public, or as product formulation advice to the food or drug industry aimed at healthy weight management.

  • We use molecular biology and biochemical approaches including Next Generation Sequencing, Real-time PCR, in situ hybridization and Western blotting to identify target genes and exploit novel in vivo agonist/antagonist or antibody delivery in techniques aimed at addressing functional responses.

 Activities

  • Charman of ACERO - Aberdeen centre for Energy Regulation and Obesity
  • I am a registered peer reviewer of manuscripts for a number of journals including the Endocrine Society journals, Endocrinology, Molecular Endocrinology, and JCEM as well as others including Physiology and Behaviour, Peptides, Molecular Nutrition and Food Research and Journal of Nutritional Health and Food Sciences.

 Supervision

PhD student: Swang Shallangwa (2017-2022) ‘Gut microbiota mediates distinct metabolic effects through different types of dietary fibre’.

MSc students: Currently supervising one MRes student and one MSc student and have supervised 8 previous MSc students.

 Teaching

  • I am course-coordinator for the MSc Human Nutrition research projects.
  • I have prepared and presented lectures for a Molecular Nutrition MSc course (RR5502).
  • I have organised and conducted tutorial sessions for project work and have judged and marked the oral presentations, and conducted workshops for practical skills on an undergraduate course (SM2501).
  • I have supervised numerous honours projects and assessed numerous honours theses.
