    Research Profile

An engineer turned law student, Mr Lorimer writes regularly on innovative legal insights stemming from his quantitative approach to jurisprudence and legal analysis. David offers an interdisciplinary perspective on the increasingly technical challenges of legal analysis and reform. His current PhD research work critically addresses complainer protections in sexual offences by positively challenging the accepted logic of key areas of procedure, evidence, and legislation as implemented in Scottish courtrooms and other jurisdictions.

Prior to a career change in order to 'seek new horizons', he was an established consulting engineer with almost 30 years experience in the Oil and Gas industry. His professional CV includes: a BSc in Engineering Science from Aberdeen University in 1980: published works on design, development and implementation of innovative multifaceted systems, including Horizontal Subsea Tree Design and Installation (OTC Paper 8252, Houston, May 1996) and Subsea Wirelining (Offshore Magazine, May 1991): author of in-house guidelines on Quantitative Risk Assessment for Subsea Installations and Safety Case submissions for Texaco North Sea UK Ltd, and Subsea Hydrate Mitigation, also for Texaco North Sea: author of a distance learning MSc course module in Subsea Engineering for Robert Gordons University: expert witness in subsea engineering patent litigation for McGrigors, Edinburgh (now Pinsent Masons), Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, London and Arnold White and Durkee, Houston. David has undertaken many CPD courses including several project management courses and a module on Managing Design with the Open University. He retired from his engineering consultancy business in 2012.
