With a background in both physics and solid state chemistry, overall I may be described as a materials scientist, with emphasis on synthesis and characterisation of novel (ceramic) materials.
My fundamental research interest is in structure-property correlations in the solid state. My research may be divided into 2 broad areas:
1) Novel oxide materials; synthesis, structure and properties
2) Synthesis and characterisation of biomaterials
In 1), we are/have looked at ionic conductors, superconductors, mixed conductors, GMR materials and other electroceramics.
For 2) we are mostly interested in materials as bone replacement materials, and we also have a collaboration which involves looking at the physical characterisation of bone itself.
Underpinning both is a general interest in crystallography, and I have enjoyed solving many crystal structures - but I should stress I am not an organic chemist by any measure!
I currently teach and/or coordinate on the following courses:
Physics
PX3016The Solid State
PX4011 Honours projects (coordinated with N. Strachan)
Chemistry
