Abstract

An examination of the previous reincarnations of the Dalai Lamas prior to the First Dalai Lama as recognised within Tibetan government histories. The work charts the development of these reincarnation lists between the First and Fifth Dalai Lamas, and the development of those lists during the lifetime of the Fifth Dalai Lama following his ascension to head of the Tibetan state at Lhasa. The talk identifies the primary rationales for choosing Tibetan and Indian historical and religious figures as prior reincarnations, and the role of this in understanding how Tibetan historians understood the role and meaning of the Dalai Lama institution.
