Abstract
This describes what is thought to be the first comprehensive application of environmental impact assessment to a leisure project under the European Community's Environmental Assessment Directive. The Bure Valley Railway is proposed to run 14.4 km in Norfolk using the route of a former British Railways line. Drawing on experience from a similar project close by in North Norfolk and the Romney, by the and Dymchurch Railway in Kent, the construction and operation impacts were assessed. All 28 recommendations made in the resulting report have been adopted by the local council. The Department of Transport is not holding a public inquiry. A decision is expected in the near future.
