Abstract

Considered as a cost-effective transport alternative for urban mobility, Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) systems are being implemented in China. This paper examines the applicability of BRT in the Chinese context. It starts by discussing the issue of rapid motorization and the motivation to introduce a BRT scheme in China, and then presents a SWOT analysis to identify the applicability of BRT systems in Chinese cities. This paper analyzes the impact of the ITS-led Southern Axis BRT Line 1, Beijing and concludes by identifying some key issues for the future implementation of BRT systems.
