Abstract
The rapid development of generative AI has sparked concerns around academic integrity. However, it also presents opportunities increase to AI literacy and support diverse learners including students with dyslexia. We explored using AI tools to support academic writing on BI20B2 (level 2 medical sciences course). 86% of students identified writing generated by ChatGPT and rated it of lower quality than human generated. Following a discussion around responsible use and possible limitations, students were permitted to use AI tools to assist with their lab reports. The small number of groups which acknowledged the use of AI tools (3.7%) found them useful.
