Abstract

When Charlotte Riddell died in 1906, obituaries at the time recog-nised her as a ‘writer of considerable reputation’ (‘Obituary’ 1906: 446) whose ‘best-known novels’ concerned ‘city and commercial life’, and whose ‘short stories were far less successful than her novels’ (‘Obituary. Mrs J. H. Riddell’ 1906: 5).
