Comparing shallow mixing layers over rough and smooth beds

Abstract

Shallow Mixing Layers (SMLs) over hydraulically rough bottom in freesurface flows behind a splitter plate are studied in an 18 m long and 1.98 m wide tilted openchannel flume. Two independent inlet tanks at the entrance create two streams with different velocities. The studied shear flows over rough bed are compared to shear flows over hydraulically smooth bed, which were previously investigated in the same flume with similar ranges of flow rate and shear parameter (λ = (U2-U1)/(U2-U1) where U2 and U1 are streamwise time-averaged velocities characterizing the high-speed and low-speed streams, respectively. The focus is on assessing the effects of the bed-surface state (rough and smooth) on the mean flow and turbulence statistics. Initial results show a difference in transverse velocity and Reynolds stress with reduced values over a rough bed. The development of the SML width shows the same overall trend reaching a constant value downstream of the channel.
