The reasonable lifetime performance of the Q-switch, cyptocyanine in methanol, has encouraged its implementation in the laser described. It greatly simplifies the design compared to a pockels cell Q-switch which is bulky and involves high voltage circuitry. In addition, the natural mode selection property of the dye Q-switch minimizes the number of mode selection components in the cavity.
