Determination of some compaction properties of ceramic powders using a simple cylindrical apparatus

Abstract

Apparatus described can be used to determine some of the mechanical properties of ceramic powders which are thought to be important during pressing. The apparatus is little more than two thin cylindrical shells with strain gauges mounted on the outer surfaces. Powder is compacted within one of the cylinders and the strains in the wall are recorded. The results from the strain gauges are then processed in a computer and estimates of the compressibility, lateral stress and coefficient of friction with the inner cylindrical wall can all be obtained with classical elastic shell theory. Adhesion between the powder and the die wall can sometimes be noticeable. The ratio of axial to lateral stresses can be different for different powders.
