Diaspora Jewish Attitudes to Metropoleis: Philo and Paul on Balanced Personalities, Split Loyalties, Jerusalem and Rome

The chapter studies the attitudes of Philo and Paul, two diaspora Jews, on Jerusalem and Rome. Philo's view that a balanced Jewish identity is intellectually independent, but still informed by loyalty to one's "mother city" (metropolis) Jerusalem and to one's home city/"fatherland" (patris) helps to explain Paul's attitude to Jerusalem in that he does not accept any theological supremacy of the apostles, but still feels the obligation to collect money for the poor among the Jerusalem Christian community.
