Effect of different temperatures on PAH extraction from soil by hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin

Abstract

Insch soil was amended with three PAH (naphthalene, phenanthrene, and chrysene). The soils were then incubated at 4°, 10°, and 20°C for up to 28 days. Sampling and extraction took place after 1, 3, 7, 14, and 28 days. The hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HPCD) extractable naphthalene fraction saw an overall decrease for all temperatures during the 28 days. Throughout the duration of the experiment the percentage of phenanthrene extracted by HPCD did not differ significantly. This study indicated how the potentially bioavailable fraction of PAH can be affected by a change in temperature over time. There was a slight decrease in the overall total being extracted and this could be linked to aging of the compound with time.
