Emerging and Novel Technologies in Reproductive and Developmental Toxicology

Abstract

The rapid advancements in technology over recent decades have significantly reshaped many scientific fields, including toxicology. The primary purpose of this special issue was to explore the use of new and emerging technologies, novel model systems, and unique methodologies that could recapitulate physiological reproductive and developmental biological processes providing reliable outcomes from toxicity testing underpinned by mechanistic understanding of the observed effects. The original research and excellent reviews published in this special issue present decisive evidence for the transformative potential related to the development, promotion, and application of emerging and novel technologies, mainly referring to innovative in vitro models and bioengineering strategies in the areas of reproductive health and toxicology.

The Special Issue aims to review and facilitate discussions on the current state-of-the-art of emerging and novel technologies as transformative approaches that are redefining how we assess and mitigate risks to reproductive health and development. The ultimate goal is to improve the accuracy and efficacy of developmental and reproductive toxicology (DART) testing in regulatory settings.
