Abstract
Helen Pierce’s recent publication of an eighteenth-century notebook detailing a corpus of drawings by the English artist Francis Place (1647–1728) expands understanding of the range and scope of his works on paper. More specifically, this material confirms the subject of a Place drawing in The Huntington’s collections as one of the earliest extant views of Glasgow, produced during the artist’s 1701 tour of Scotland. This essay sets out the physical and contextual evidence for this confirmation.
