Hip Fractures: are there Meteorological influences?

Fractures of the neck of femur (# NoF) are a common reason for presentation to the Emergency Department (ED) (Figure 1). These injuries are often termed fragility fractures and most commonly occur due falls in patients who are elderly and frail. In those cases were a # NoF is sustained outside, the weather can be implicated by patients and carers as an important aetiological influence. A clearer understanding of any association between meteorological variables and the presentation of these injuries may help guide service planning and resource allocation at different times of the year.
