Infertility, An Overview

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

One in seven couples experience infertility. Despite a wide array of assisted reproductive technologies there are significant challenges in access to treatment. The main types of infertility are anovulatory, male factor, tubal, endometriosis and unexplained. With the anovulation, which responds to hormonal ovulation induction, there is limited scope for etiological treatment for the other types of infertility. Intrauterine insemination in conjunction with controlled ovarian stimulation can be used in couples with acceptable semen parameters and patent tubes. Prolonged unresolved infertility is best treated by in vitro fertilization - with concurrent intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) in cases of male infertility.
