Abstract
This is the text of the keynote lecture delivered to the 3rd Congress of Lithuanian Historians, held in Šiauliai, Lithuania, in October 2012. It sets the Polish-Lithuanian union in European context by comparing it to other contemporaraneous unions, in particular the Anglo-Scottish union.
