Abstract

With an estimated 20,000 Australian Army, Navy, and Air Force personnel missing from twentieth‐century conflicts, the task of locating, identifying, and providing a burial for those that gave their lives for their country is a daunting task. A small group of specialists, trained in a diverse range of disciplines, from military history through to human osteology, work with the Australian Unrecovered War Casualties–Army unit to undertake this task. Case studies from a range of conflicts and situations illustrate the nature of the work.
