Abstract

This book explores the myriad political, cultural, social and economic factors that shaped (and were shaped by) developments in STEM fields in the Russian Revolution and Civil War. It looks especially at the complex transformations occasioned by Russia's 'continuum of crisis' during c.1914-24, casting new light on longstanding debates about Russia's path to modernisation; the contributions of its scientific and technical experts; and the extent to which the institutions and methods adopted by Soviet leaders were built on foundations established by their imperial predecessors.
