Abstract
This paper discusses a professional development programme which facilitated the negotiation of professional identity in a changing field of practice. It describes a pedagogy which drew on ideas of social learning in communities of practice and which was an intentional discursive move to project some discourses and resist others, in a contested space created by hybrid policy discourses. The value of a Virtual Learning Environment as a mediating tool is considered. Finally, some evidence of new professional identities - of practitioners becoming activist professionals - is presented.
