The Ulster Cycle: History, Fiction, or Literature?

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

This article explores the question of whether the prose narratives of the mediaeval Gaelic 'Ulster Cycle', written from the eighth to the fifteenth centuries, were intended and received as history or as fiction. It moves on from this to explore what is at stake in referring to these narratives using the modern category 'literature'.
