Abstract

Although tourism is listed by UNEP (2011) as one of the key sectors where a transition to sustainable development should be pursued, and is considered by UNWTO (www.unwto.org, 2017) as a key driver for realising the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), still little is known on how sustainability transitions in tourism unfold, what place-specific and historical factors shape them, and how tourism contributes to wider sustainability transitions. The aim of this chapter is to bridge the gap between tourism studies and the interdisciplinary field of sustainability transitions and set an agenda for future research on the interdependencies between sustainability transitions and tourism evolution. The paper makes a case for an evolutionary perspective - a combination of evolutionary economic geography (EEG) and geographical political economy (GPE). As such, it distils useful conceptual language for the task at hand. Particular attention is paid to innovations and their central role in sustainability transitions.
