Abstract

A minor shift in the voting pattern among Black men toward the Republican Party in the 2024 US presidential election has provoked a wave of media commentary, in which expert observers have attempted to parse this apparently portentous shift in the composition of Donald Trump’s “Make America Great Again” electoral coalition.[1] Such interpretations of the success of the contemporary US far right seek for novelty in Trump’s “white nationalism,” which, according to R. J. Boutelle in this compelling intellectual history, ought instead to be framed as a modern rearticulation of ideas rooted in nineteenth-century assertions of a Manifest Destiny...
