Abstract
By the time of Cuban independence in 1898, London was the capital of an empire on which it was said that “the sun never sets.” However, it is traditionally believed that Britain did not have a dominant position in Latin America, excluding parts of the Caribbean, and certainly did not have it in Cuba, which was the last territory of the Spanish empire in Latin America to gain independence from Madrid in the last years of the 19th century.
