Abstract
A new generation of artists came of age in Leningrad during the perestroika era. Among them was a man with the nickname and artistic name of Afrika. Sergei Bugaev’s renaming of himself is indicative of the shifting of signifiers that occurs throughout his work; in adopting the name of an entire continent, the artist displaces the linguistic sign, using it to refer to a person.
