The effects of cure temperature on the tensile strength of scarf joints between aluminium substrate and epoxy resins are examined. The measured tensile strengths showed strong dependence on the adhesive layer thickness, cure temperature and the scarf angle. A failure initiation criterion is proposed for bonded joints subjected to a combination of thermal and mechanical loading, based upon the critical value of a free-edge stress intensity factor. Free-edge failure occurs when the free-edge intensity factor attains a critical value irrespective of the cure temperature and layer thickness.
