Abstract
In December 2019 a pneumonia of unknown cause, subsequently identified as caused by a coronavirus and named coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), was first detected in Wuhan, China. The virus causing it was named ‘severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 20, or SARS-CoV-2, as it is related to the virus that caused the ‘severe acute respiratory syndrome’ (SARS) outbreak in 2003.1 Coronaviruses are single-stranded RNA viruses which cause illnesses ranging in severity from the common cold to severe and fatal pneumonia.2
