Abstract
Inspired by the idea of the crossroads, this programme is focussed on the meeting points between different musical styles, the free sharing of ideas when people travel, bringing new music and experiences, from the collecting of folk melodies to work mixing classical & non-western styles. We pair historical pieces with improvised / newly-written “reflections” based on older material, from folk material gathered in 18th-century Scotland, China, and India, to Franco-Italian sonatas by Elisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre, and country dances by Ignatius Sancho, the first Black Briton to publish music.
