Abstract
As technology developments in autonomy increasingly drive control from ship to shore, questions arise whether the existing legal framework governing marine insurance is adequate. It is, of course, a difficult task to discuss the future and, like the algorithms that enable autonomy, the discussions can often descend to ‘if this then this, if that then that’. This chapter examines some issues that may arise in relation to legal liability and insurance as autonomy in shipping becomes increasingly utilised.
