Abstract

The purpose of this chapter is to examine the evidence and critically discuss responses to bereavement within the primary care setting. The key message is that death, bereavement and grieving are normal life events and that the medicalisation of grief should be avoided. Bereavement does not occur in isolation, but is subject to a greater or lesser degree by the influencing factors of family, the community, professionals and society.
