Abstract

Fetal surgery is a relatively new, highly specialised, and continually developing field of medicine. For many anaesthetists it may seem like an abstract concept, or to be contained within the realms of documentary viewing. In an expanding field of interventions and availability of treatment centres, it becomes important to highlight the principles of maternal-fetal surgery and anaesthesia to a wider audience. The editor, a professor of anaesthesiology at Texas Children's Hospital, has brought together 21 US-based, multispeciality, expert contributors to create a 200-page overview of the subspeciality and offer insight into current practice and future directions.
