Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

The relationship between capitalism and imperialism has been a major theme in the scholarship on empires. After considering the terms, this entry reviews the major traditions which have explored this relationship. It explores “classical” liberal and Marxist treatments, then later scholarship on the links between capitalism and the causes and consequences of imperial expansion, and recent works on globalization.
