Abstract

By and large, the specific characteristics of online doctoral education is unknown. This qualitative study is the first attempt to unpack what it means to be an online doctoral student. I employ the concept of cognitive apprenticeship to help us better understand the individual trajectories of students in online programs. The data show that when the technological affordances are coupled with the structural design, doctoral students in online programmes seem to encounter further challenges that hinder their development as scholars. This research provides both theoretical and practical accounts for further discussion and debate on online doctoral provision in general and doctoral students' experience in these programmes in specific. It concludes that rethinking the theory and practice of online doctoral provision in relation to the concept of cognitive apprenticeship can provide more nuanced means for understanding the specific characteristics of online doctoral provision.
