Abstract

This paper builds on my earlier work on Arctic domestication to think through how the ethical project of reciprocity and respect presents a distinct model of politics. Drawing on examples from Rangifer domestication, relationships with submerged or “extinct” beings, and a growing movement to control sustenance across the North, the paper adopts Ivan Illich’s and Paul Gilroy’s work on conviviality to pose a model of how life can thrive in shared spaces.
