Walking with the Mammoth Through the Iron Curtain
This article deals with the transnational history of the mammoth as a unique paleontological finding and political object which fuses together features of extinct and extant species. Based on archival research, the author traces
the social life of the mammoth through various social and political environments. This article argues that the mammoth was able to constitute some Soviet academic institutions (e.g. Paleontological Institute in Moscow) and also assisted scholars and politicians in various forms of diplomacy across the national borders during the Cold War.
