Dodgy dossiers? Hearsay and the 1641 depositions

Abstract

The article discusses statements known as the 1641 Depositions, given by Protestants in the wake of the 1641 Irish Rebellion concerning the alleged massacre of Protestants by Catholics. It focuses on the Language and Linguistic Evidence in the 1641 Depositions interdisciplinary research project, based out of Aberdeen, Scotland, which analyzes the credibility of the Depositions and investigates the question of hearsay. The author comments on researchers' uses of computer software and linguistic and forensic analysis.
