The virtues of good writing in systematic and doctrinal enquiry are numerous. I have previously observed in an Editorial the importance to good theology of the qualities of faithfulness, attentiveness, humility, and joy, and have drawn attention in particular to the desideratum of clarity in dogmatic work. Yet as adverted at the time, such a list was never intended to be comprehensive; and as time has passed, I have regretted theexclusion from that list of one particular characteristic more than any other – the virtue of patience. As with the other virtues listed, it is as much an attribute of the practitioner as of the text
