Drilling in a politically and environmentally sensitive area such as the Arctic presents huge challenges to oil operators. The problem lies where unlike conventional drilling, the Arctic is a region of the world so unhospitable that humans cannot conduct and operate the drilling process on-site. A solution to this is to make use of autonomous robotic technology. This report highlights the findings of a feasibility study that was undertaken to assess the application of robotic drilling systems (RDS) in Arctic conditions. The key aims of this feasibility study was to investigate if autonomous robotic drilling systems can be utilised in arctic conditions to make drilling safer and more efficient as compared to conventional techniques whilst also investigating the past, present and future applications of robotic drilling systems in order to then go on to make recommendations to operators and service companies alike on how to proceed with advancing this technology. Research into robotic drilling systems and robotics in general with regards to their applications in the oil and gas industry is still in its infancy, despite increased use in its sister industries such as the space industry. Future research into robotics and robotic drilling systems is recommended in order to meet the growing demand for energy around the world. It is crucial that the technology of the future should be developed today in order to conquer the energy challenge. With conventional resources becoming harder to reach, it is paramount that if drilling is to commence in an area such as the Arctic, that it is done with extreme caution and care with regards to the environment and safety of personnel. Robotic drilling systems could hold the key to being able to explore these new frontiers.
