Abstract

This chapter explores the foundation values of the Professional Standards and support teachers to critically reflect on how these values are embedded in mentoring. It also considers the key knowledge, skills and dispositions that mentors require to support student teachers effectively through the transition phase to become fully registered teachers in Scotland by identifying the ways mentors can assist beginning teachers to evolve and develop their practice, through self-assessment and target-setting. Finally, it offers ways to critically reflect on the use of the Professional Standards as a framework for supporting the professional growth of teachers in the early career phase.
