Abstract

This chapter contributes to the debate about how far WW1 was responsible for the outbreak of revolution in Russia in February 1917. Traditionally railway failings have been cited as a key cause of the revolution. This chapter questions that analysis, and links the railways' war experience to the broader question of the war's legacy for the early development of the Soviet state.
